Fantasia and Fugue on 'Torre Bermeja'

Written in 1960, at Segovia's request. 'A late-evening phone call (from Segovia, in 1959 or 1960)) announced that, “Rodrigo has written for me a piece in the shadow of Torre Bermeja, would you also write one?”.' The aim of this was to avoid playing Rodrigo's piece but, in a letter from the composer, Rodrigo said he had never considered writing such a piece! The Torre Bermeja in question is the piano piece by Isaac Albeniz, Op.92 No.12, which Llobet, Segovia and many others have arranged. Segovia never played the piece, but he did hear John Williams play some excerpts in July 1959, at John Williams' flat. Segovia thought it was a piece by Albeniz!
