Tentos I

Written for the Tarragó Quartet (Barcelona) in 1975 after hearing them play some modern quartets. The Quartet received the music at Christmas 1975, but in 1977 were still discussing the first performance. Duarte noted in a letter in 1981, ' ... Tentos, which I wrote in a period of madness for a quartet whose ability I overestimated'. The music is difficult, but not impossible and uses many effects and tonal/atonal styles.
