Suite Piemontese

Written in 1970, this Suite was commissioned by Edizioni Musicali Bèrben as an Italian counterpart to English Suite Op.31 and dedicated to the Italian guitarist, Angelo Gilardino. Gilardino sent some sheets of manuscript paper containing a selection of folk songs (the manuscript is headed Canzoni Popolari Piemontesi), from which Duarte selected a few. Pastorale is based on the tune La pastora fedele, Canzona is based on a combination of two tunes; Il testamento dell'avvelenato and Re Gilardin and La Danza is self-explanatory.
