Shades of Blue

Written in 1994 for the Zagreb Guitar Trio, to celebrate their 10th anniversary. In February 1994 Duarte received a reminder from Darko Petrinjak that he had promised to write a piece for them. Instant inspiration must have taken place because the piece was premiered three months later. As well as a skilled guitarist, Petrinjak was also a very good double bass player, an instrument which Duarte played in his youth. The first movement makes reference to the opening of Monteverdi's Vespers, 1610, the 2nd movement is a double bass blues and the 3rd movement has many 'shocking' changes of meter.
